21 Puerto Rico Women’s Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers

Drug and alcohol addictions truly affect an entire community and beyond. Puerto Rico is a gateway to trafficking drugs, and Puerto Ricans living on the Caribbean island aren’t without their own substance abuse issues. Fortunately, there are a variety of specialized addiction treatment programs, including women-only rehabs, so individuals can get the help they need to overcome addiction.
Puerto Rican males overwhelmingly made up the majority of substance abuse admissions at facilities within Puerto Rico, according to a 2013 government survey. However, about 11 percent of the substance abuse admissions were women. While there is quite a significant difference between the two genders seeking treatment, only a little more than 3,000 patients were reported in treatment at the time of the survey.
Approximately 21 programs designed specifically for women are available in Puerto Rico, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) 2011 report.

For one, these programs not only focus on treating the disease of addiction, but also the effects that it has on a woman and her family. Oftentimes these facilities offer onsite daycare and live-in options for children while their mothers undergo treatment. Additionally, these programs address the underlying reasons for a woman’s addiction, such as stress, domestic violence, or sexual abuse.
