Teen Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers In West Virginia
Published on March 11, 2016
Signs of substance abuse in teens include, but are not limited to, a sudden drop in grades, unexplained changes in weight, and changes in sleeping patterns or appearance. If you have noticed these signs in your teenager, he or she may be in need of a substance abuse treatment program. West Virginia offers a variety of teen-focused rehab centers to help them get on the path to recovery.
Adolescent Treatment Programs in West Virginia
Teenagers, between the ages of 12 and 17, need different types of treatment than adults. This is because their bodies and brains are still developing. The adolescent may also have an untreated mental health issue. Statistics reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) state that 9.3 percent of teenagers in West Virginia suffer from Major Depressive Episodes (MDE), which is considered a risk factor for substance abuse.
It is estimated that between 6.31 and 7.51 percent of teens in West Virginia have used drugs or alcohol within the past month, according to SAMHSA and between 2.83 and 3.02 percent need treatment but are not receiving it. Substance abuse treatment programs for teenagers and adolescents should address addiction, mental health and behavior in order to give the teenager the best chance of leading a sober life.
Types of Treatment Programs
Outpatient Treatment
Intensive outpatient treatment programs meet for several hours during the day. While in this type of program, teenagers will receive treatment for a certain number of hours each day and go home at night.
Residential treatment programs can last anywhere from 30 days to 90 days or longer. While in the program, the teenager will receive 24-hour care for substance abuse. These programs also offer group and individual counseling.
Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention treatment starts after the teenager has completed either a residential program or an outpatient program. These programs are geared towards helping teenagers avoid tempting situations that could lead to a relapse, and they provide constant support and encouragement for remaining drug-free.
Adolescent Treatment Methods
The most successful programs for teenagers address the entire person, not just the addiction, and they offer custom treatment programs that address the teenagers strengths and weaknesses. Within the programs, there are typically three methods of initial treatment, including Family Based, Behavioral Therapy and Addiction Medications, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Family Based
Family based methods involve including the entire family so that the teenager has a solid support system in the treatment center and at-home. These programs seek to address communication, conflict resolution, substance abuse and behavior.
Behavioral Therapy
Behavioral therapy focuses on helping the teenager think through potential actions in order to avoid negative consequences and future drug and alcohol use. These programs typically offer group and individual counseling that revolves around modifying bad behaviors, improving communication and keeping stress levels low.
Addiction Medications
Addiction medications replace the teenagers’ abused drug and are simply utilized for safe withdrawal during recovery. However, it is important to note that there are no addiction medications that are FDA approved for adolescent use, and the teenager will eventually have to step down from the medication in order to become completely drug-free.
