Teen Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers In Vermont

When a teen becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol, they begin a lifelong battle that is challenging to overcome. Young people who experiment with drugs or alcohol, or who are battling mental illness, can easily fall victim to this deadly disease. Fortunately, Vermont offers a variety of rehab centers that specialize in the treatment of teens who suffer from addiction.

Unfortunately, teens are similar to adults in the fact that those who are suffering from addiction do not always get the treatment that they need. Adolescents who are dealing with substance abuse issues and have developed a dependency on drugs and alcohol should find a recovery treatment program specifically for teen patients.

In Vermont, teen drug use is a prevalent issue. It has one of the highest rates of illicit drug use in the country amongst people between the ages of 12 and 17. In 2013 and 2014, about 10.4 to 14.5 percent of teens had used an illicit drug during a 30-day period. Similar to trends taking place across the country in various demographics, many teens do not get the treatment they need when they are dependent on drugs and alcohol. In Vermont, about 3 percent of teens need treatment for drug abuse, but they never reach out to the qualified recovery specialists who can help them truly conquer their addiction.

Complicating matters further is the matter of mental health. Depression is common in teenagers, and it can increase the risk of addiction significantly. In Vermont, about 4,000 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 experienced a major depressive episode throughout the year between the years of 2009 and 2013. By 2013, 9.5 percent of teens had experienced a major depressive episode in the previous year. Teens who are dealing with depression and addiction should consider a recovery treatment program that offers dual diagnosis care, which will address both issues and help patients recover completely.

Recovery Treatment Programs for Teens

Similar to adult recovery treatment programs, there are various program levels available for adolescents. Teens should work with their families and recovery specialists in order to decide which program is right for them. Some of the options include:

  • Inpatient Treatment — Residential treatment centers provide teens with a respite from their daily lives, and allow them to focus entirely on their recovery. Medical care, counseling services and recreational programs are available. Programs can last for 30, 60, 90, or 120 days, depending on the level of addiction.
  • Outpatient Counseling — Outpatient counseling allows teens to work with licensed therapists who can help them uncover the root cause of their addiction and assist them in creating a plan for moving forward. It is recommended that teens participate in group counseling sessions as well as private therapy sessions.
  • After-care Recovery Facilities — Sober living is recommended for teens who have recently overcome a severe addiction to drugs and alcohol. These facilities provide adolescents with support as they begin an independent, sober life once again.
  • Relapse Prevention Programs — Continuing counseling is recommended for teens, as they enter into their adult years as a sober person.
