Teen Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers In Michigan
Published on March 11, 2016
The teenage years are a tumultuous time, which is why young adults are particularly susceptible to the dangers of illicit drugs and alcohol. Between the pressure to appear cool and the curiosity to try something new and forbidden, many teens begin using drugs and alcohol while they are in middle school and high school. Fortunately, Michigan offers a variety of programs to help teens get on the path to recovery.
In 2011 and 2012, more than 11 percent of teens between the ages of 12 and 17 used illicit drugs in a 30-day period. In many cases, teens abuse these illicit drugs and continue to use them on a regular basis. This is a slippery slope that can quickly lead to addiction. Without treatment from qualified recovery professionals, teens may be struggling with addiction for the rest of their lives.
During the years 2013 and 2014, about 3.25 percent of adolescents required treatment for addiction but did not receive it. This is a trend that is true for most people who struggle from addiction, but teens in particular may not recognize the signs of addiction, and they may not be aware of the resources that are available.
It’s important to recognize that addiction in young people, in particular, can be compounded by the presence of a mental illness. Adolescent patients who are battling a mental health issue, such as depression or anxiety, may be more likely to become addicted or may be more likely to have a severe addiction to drugs and alcohol.
In Michigan during the years 2012-2013, 10.2 percent of teens between the ages of 12-17 suffered from a major depressive episode. This is slightly more than average in the country, as 9.9 percent of teens in the United States experienced a major depressive episode during the same time period. Mental health and addiction are linked in many ways, making it even more important that young people receive treatment when they showcase the signs and symptoms of addiction.
Adolescent Recovery Treatment Options
Adolescent patients should be treated differently than adults, because their bodies respond to addiction differently, and they are coping with a unique stage of life. Young adults who need treatment for substance abuse disorders should work with qualified recovery professionals who specialize in adolescent treatment. There are several treatment options available for teens, including:
- Group Therapy — Group therapy allows teen patients to connect with others who are going through similar struggles. Trained counselors must be present in order to manage the conversation and to avoid glorifying the use of drugs and alcohol.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — This treatment approach encourages teens to understand the negative consequences of using drugs and helps them to develop effective ways to cope with various situations where drugs and alcohol may be present.
- Family Behavior Therapy — This treatment option encourages families and patients to work together in order to develop a treatment plan and achieve sobriety.
- Medication — Various prescription medications can be used in order to minimize the symptoms of addiction and withdrawal.
