Rep. John Nygren of Marinette helped bring into effect the Heroin, Opioid, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Agenda to combat rising rates of opioid abuse in Wisconsin. Part of the HOPE Agenda is a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) that requires doctors to report prescriptions within 24 hours and look at a patient’s history before prescribing.
Rates of opioid prescriptions have dropped in the last couple of years in Wisconsin, as has doctor shopping (patients visiting several doctors to obtain multiple prescriptions). The HOPE Agenda also supports greater access to naloxone, an opioid-overdose reversal agent, and Good Samaritan laws that support individuals calling 911 in case of an overdose.
Unfortunately, opioid overdose rates are still high in Wisconsin, and are rising at alarming rates.
