Opioid drugs are a significant problem in many parts of Wisconsin. Overdose deaths and hospitalizations have been on the rise for several years. Jefferson County saw a decline in drug-related deaths in 2017, which may be the result of a wider availability of naloxone (Narcan).
Naloxone is an opioid-overdose reversal agent that has saved lives across the state. Many counties, including Jefferson, offer free naloxone training to community members.
While naloxone can prevent overdose death, it does not slow drug trafficking. Recent cases of drug arrests in Jefferson County include:
- A Fort Atkinson man was found with more than a pound of cocaine, $30,000 cash, and eight guns in May 2018.
- A woman was arrested in Jefferson County in August 2018 for methamphetamine possession. Police also found $18,000 of counterfeit money in her vehicle.
Jefferson County has several initiatives in place to prevent substance abuse, most notably for those arrested on simple drug charges. People who receive an OWI or DUI may enter a drug court treatment program, which gives them addiction treatment rather than jail time.
Jefferson County also provides naltrexone (Vivitrol) to individuals addicted to opioids and alcohol when they leave prison. The goal is to prevent further drug-related crime by treating the addiction, which is often the root of the problem.
