Biddeford, Maine is home to over 21,000 people and is considered the commercial center of York County. The city is a resort community that features plenty of sights and things to do. One of the state’s fastest growing communities, Biddeford is uniquely situated near New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. Naloxone, an opioid reversal medication, was used in York County in 2016 more than any other district in the state of Maine. In 2017, it was reported that York County contributed to 20 percent of statewide opioid-related overdoses. What’s more, out of all the opioid-related overdose fatalities in Maine, York County was responsible for 19 percent. To combat this growing concern, the county was recently awarded a grant to provide long-term support for opioid addiction.
