Substance Abuse In Key West & Monroe County
The Monroe County Community Health Almanac of 2017 provided an overall snapshot of residents’ health. Its data included the following statistics obtained during a substance abuse survey of youth in 2014:
- Over their lifetime, 10 percent of middle school youth and nearly 40 percent of high schoolers reported using marijuana.
- More than 11 percent of high school-aged youth used over the counter drugs inappropriately in the lifetime. This is nearly double the rate in Florida.
- Club drugs were used by nearly nine percent of Monroe County’s high schoolers. The state average was 4.5 percent.
- Almost 11 percent of high schoolers in Monroe County indicated that they used prescription pain relievers at some point in their lifetime.
