A supervisor in the Oakland office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) spoke to Livermore-area community leaders in 2016, describing drug use in the community. Some facts from Alameda County include:
- About half of overdose deaths in the community come from prescription drugs.
- A Livermore Police Department Public Information Officer said that student-athletes were at risk for opioid addiction after suffering sports injuries.
- In one month in July 2014, the Oakland region DEA counted 14.6 million purchases of hydrocodone (Vicodin) pills.
- 248 people died of drug overdoses in Alameda County in 2013, according to the California Department of Public Health.
