The state participates in Medicaid Expansion, which increases the number of residents who have access to coverage for drug treatment programs. West Virginia also requires patients to show identification at a pharmacy before receiving controlled substances. Its required prescription drug monitoring program ensures that physicians and public health officials can track prescription use and potential abuse of medications.
