Pennsylvania Drug Detox Centers

With more than 50 Americans dying each day from prescription drug overdoses, America is truly facing a prescription drug epidemic — and Pennsylvania is no exception. The keystone state has the 14th highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States, an 89 percent increase since 1999. The majority of these overdose deaths are due to prescription drug abuse, according to a new report from the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH).

While Pennsylvania has taken several important steps to halt the rate of drug overdose deaths, more can be done. The state has instituted a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program and also passed a law to crack down on so-call “doctor shopping”. This law prohibits patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider. The state also requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance.

Finally, under the state’s Medicaid plan, individuals who are suspected of misusing controlled substances must use a single prescriber and pharmacy. The does not, however, allow pharmacists to require an ID prior to dispensing a controlled substance or require prescriber education about prescription drug abuse.

Drug Detox Is The First Step To Sobriety

Prescription drug abuse can be very scary and overwhelming, especially if you or a loved one is struggling to quit. Both physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms are extremely difficult to manage without medical assistance. Physical withdrawal symptoms for prescription painkillers, heroin and cocaine may include nausea, vomiting, muscle tremors, joint pain, diarrhea and seizures. Emotional symptoms may include intense feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as suicidal thoughts.

Attempting to manage this withdrawal symptoms without medical supervision can be dangerous, and may even result in death. Medically supervised drug detox will help individuals safely overcome withdrawal symptoms and take an important first step towards long term sobriety.
