Nevada has the fourth highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. The number of drug overdose deaths, the majority of which are due to prescription drugs, increased by 80% since 1999. Nevada permits pharmacists to require an ID prior to dispensing a controlled substance. The state also participated in Medicaid Expansion, which helps expand coverage of substance abuse services and treatment. Finally, under Nevada’s Medicaid plan, the state’s lock-in program requires individuals who are suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy.
