Nevada Drug Detox Centers

Nevada has the fourth highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. The number of drug overdose deaths, the majority of which are due to prescription drugs, increased by 80% since 1999. Prescription drugs are a nationwide epidemic and top public health concern, according the Trust for America’s Health, which found that the number of prescription drug related deaths now outnumber the deaths from heroin and cocaine combined.

Nevada is taking several important steps to curb the prescription drug epidemic. Nevada requires mandatory utilization of the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and has passed tough laws cracking down on doctor shopping. These laws prohibit patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider. Nevada’s “Physical Exam Requirement” requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance.

Nevada permits pharmacists to require an ID prior to dispensing a controlled substance. The state also participated in Medicaid Expansion, which helps expand coverage of substance abuse services and treatment. Finally, under Nevada’s Medicaid plan, the state’s lock-in program requires individuals who are suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy.
