In reaction to rapidly increasing rates of prescription drug abuse, the White House has created a task force to reduce addiction rates and encourage those suffering from drug abuse to seek help. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently declared prescription drug abuse an epidemic, noting that drug-induced fatalities were second only to motor vehicle accidents from 1999 through 2007. Although Illinois has the 12th lowest mortality rate from prescription drug overdoses in the United States, thousands of individuals in the state struggle to control their use of prescription medications. Rates of fatal overdose have increased 50% since 1999. The most commonly abused drugs in Illinois include oxycodone, codeine, benzodiazepines, sleep aids (e.g., Ambien), and anti-anxiety drugs such as Xanax.
Measures Taken To Counteract Prescription Drug Abuse
Illinois lawmakers take the state’s prescription drug problem seriously, implementing 8 out of 10 promising strategies to combat drug abuse. Among these include Medicaid Expansion programs designed to increase access to substance abuse treatment programs. Illinois also has so-called “Samaritan laws” that provide legal immunity to individuals seeking help for a potential overdose. The state has also implemented a law designed to increase access to naloxone, a medication that can counteract the effects of prescription opioids.
