Indiana Court Ordered Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers
Because of the role alcohol and drugs plays in crime in Indiana, court-ordered treatment is sometimes part of the sentence for people who commit crimes related to controlled substances.
Alcohol and drug abuse are serious problems in the state of Indiana. In fact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that approximately 453,000 people in the state of Indiana were abusing drugs or alcohol during 2007. Unfortunately, the abuse of drugs or alcohol often leads to problems with the law, and many of these individuals are eventually arrested. For example, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, more than 30 percent of males with two or more arrests have abused illicit drugs in the past year. Likewise, more than half of males in this category have abused alcohol in the past year.
What Is Court-Ordered Treatment?
If you commit a crime related to drug or alcohol, court-ordered substance abuse treatment may be mandated by the judge. Either the treatment will be part of your sentence, or it may be offered as an alternative to a more serious punishment, such as incarceration. In other cases, the court may require you to enter substance abuse treatment because of evidence presented by a concerned family member or friend.
Court-ordered treatment programs are not much different from voluntary treatment programs. In most cases, they will include detoxification, group therapy, individual therapy and other treatment methods intended to help you cope with your addiction and achieve sobriety. However, unlike a voluntary treatment program, court-ordered treatment programs won’t allow you to discontinue treatment without incurring consequences.
Depending on the recommendations of the court and/or your preferences, your court-ordered treatment program may be outpatient or inpatient. While outpatient treatment programs allow you to return to your home in between treatment sessions or activities, inpatient treatment programs require you to remain in the facility as a resident until your treatment program is complete.
