While Vertava Health does not currently have MassHealth as an in-network provider, we are constantly working to expand our providers and also provide a variety of payment options. The information below is for educational purposes only.

If you qualify for MassHealth coverage, you may be able to receive prescriptions, attend doctor visits, qualify for hospital stays, and seek other important health-related services like addiction treatment. Even if you already have coverage, you may qualify for no-cost coverage, low-cost coverage, or partial coverage.

How To Apply For MassHealth

There are three applications for MassHealth, and people seeking coverage should apply accordingly. They include the following three options:

  • individuals and families, including people with disabilities
  • seniors and people who need long-term care
  • assistance with paying Medicare Part B premiums (MassHealth buy-in)

To find specific criteria for each, and for more information on these applications, please go here. If you’re approved, you’ll be added to one of the following MassHealth plans:

  • MassHealth Standard
  • MassHealth CommonHealth
  • MassHealth Family Assistance
  • MassHealth CarePlus

What To Expect After You’re Accepted

After being added to a coverage plan, you’ll have to enroll online through the MassHealth webpage. Plans you’re eligible for are based on where you live in Massachusetts. You’ll receive information about which hospitals accept plan coverage according to your region.

Payments and coverage vary according to each plan. Treatment under any health coverage plan should be approached with an open mind-—cost and payments depend largely on a number of factors, including the facility or treatment plan chosen, prescriptions, and more.

This is why it’s important to first enroll in a health care plan that covers substance abuse treatment. This can help to offset costs or even cover them completely. Choosing a plan that is right for you or your loved one will help aid your recovery journey.

How MassHealth Covers Substance Abuse Treatment

MassHealth offers a comprehensive array of treatment options. The types of treatment covered depends on your eligibility. Many of the MassHealth coverage plans cover different forms of substance abuse treatment, including:

In addition, and as outlined by the MassHealth Provider Manual Series: Substance Use Disorder Treatment Manual, acute inpatient substance use disorder treatment services may be included.

Coverage may also include services provided by “freestanding opioid treatment service centers.” The means you could engage in individual, group, and family counseling through the service center, as well as receive FDA-approved medications for opioid addiction if necessary.

In terms of outpatient counseling services, the manual notes that individual, family, couples, or group counseling, case consultation, and acupuncture detoxification may be covered.

Lastly, MassHealth offers a definitive list of services for pregnant women, including intensive outpatient services, day treatment, and “enhanced acute inpatient substance use disorder treatment services.”

Within these offerings, you or your loved one can find the treatment, tools, and coping skills that are necessary towards building a more fulfilling and drug-free life.
